EATING FM: “DC CRISPY MAC N CHEESE”

DJ Virman x Barack Obama
Out in Washington DC our fam took us to a famous soul food spot called Ben’s Next Door. Its right Next Door to a famous chili spot called Ben’s… yea it all makes sense now. They are known for the dry rub ribs, crispy fried chicken and the crispy mac and cheese so we ordered all. Delicious.
When we ordered fried chicken the server said they only had white meat so i was hesitant because its always dry, but i shoulda known a spot like this would make sure it wasnt dry. They nailed it for sure… every bite was juicy n crispy n not leaking grease like pop-eyes. The crispy mac n cheese is now the only way i want to eat mac n cheese.. was a good call. My first time ever eating a classic with this spin. They used a different type of white cheese giving it a gourmet taste and the top was super crispy for the perfect mash up. I’m going to try and make it at home but i don’t think i can use the kraft box in the pantry.
The menu had took soul food to a new place.. crab cakes, cornbread mini muffins, belgium style waffles. We definitely felt the soul in DC.

EATING FM Rating system:
***3 Fingers up - MUST EAT.. crave for it.. amazing food. If you dont try it your missing out on life…
**2 Fingers up – Great Taste, if you get a chance… try it… i recommend it.
* 1 Finger up – Kinda wish i didnt eat there or order what i ordered … but i ate it and now im full.
- Middle Finger up – i threw it away while eating it… if i had a brick i’d throw it through the window.. and if i had lighter fluid and a lighter.. i’d burn that mutha down…

What WE Thought:
Restaurant: Ben’s Next Door
Location: Washington DC
Price Range: plates range from $14 to $30.. fancy soul food
We recommend: Crispy Mac n Cheese, Fried Chicken, Coleslaw
Service: waitress was nice, not cool that they cut off waffle service before 5pm tho.. wanted chicken n waffles.
Rating: – **2.5 FINGERS UP.
Food was awesome… but for the price it should be that good. If it was cheaper and a hidden spot it would have totally got 3 fingers up. Everytime we’re in DC we’re going here.

EATING FM – “PITTSBURGH FAT HEADS”
The Far East Movement landed in Pittsburgh with the Party Rock Tour for our first time. Did a collab with the homie Wiz Khalifa on our Animal Album who is the man out there so we hollered but he was outta town so we had to adventure around this new city alone…

The sold out show was at a spot called Diesel on a small but cool street on the South Side of Pittsburgh.. didn’t get a pic but line was wrapped around the blog before the doors open… have a feeling the Burgh is going to rock..
VIDEO: FM PERFORMING “FETISH” @ Diesel – Pittsburgh

Kev Nish backstage illin. Orisue Mint Button down matches green room lol.
FAR EAST MOVEMENT Loves Pittsburgh.. the crowd was insane the whole show and reppin with 3 fingers up by the end of the night
Weather was cold and raining so we was looking for something hearty to eat to give us energy to fight off the colds and flu that’s been spreadin like plague on the news lately. Down the street from Diesel was just the spot..
EATING FM – “PITTSBURGH FAT HEAD’S”
FAT HEAD’s Restaurant. This place looked like a “Pittsburgh ONLY” type restaurant.. with the Steelers playin on the screens and everyone rocking their jerseys so it was only right we hit this joint up with an FM review. I think the theme to Fat Head’s is that everything on the menu is a FAT portion and that’s kinda what we needed. Selection on the menu was pretty good from ribs, steaks, chicken, burgers, sandwiches and salads that defeat the purpose of being a salad. The kind of salads with more of everything else than lettuce. The kind of salads that are prolly less healthy for you than a burger lol

J-Splif and Prohgress with No caption needed… lol
The shrimp salad caught my attention… it had grilled jumbo shrimp, grilled peppers, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, asperagus, hard boiled egg and grilled potato wedges? first time i in my life i’ve heard of adding grilled potatoes to a regular lettuce salad.

those are JUMBO Shrimp.
The potatoes were kinda a lot of food, but there were small slivers that were crispy that was kinda good like croutons. The shrimp and grilled veggies was off the hook, i ended up eating all of that and leaving the lettuce HAHAH which defeats the purpose of a salad but its all good cuz in the menu they say they take pride in making salads that’s bad for you.

Rating: – **2 Fingers Up – as good and filling as this meal was, i wouldn’t fiend for it in LA.

- PARTY ROCK TOUR: LINCOLN, NEBRASKA
IF you follow our EATING FM FOOD REVIEWS, you’ll see that we favor mexican food growing up in Los Angeles and i’d say we’re close to professionals at knowin what the legit ISH is. All the food on tour has been beef jerky, gummy bears, chips, and microwave food so as soon as we pulled up in Lincoln, Nebraska we found the first Mexican restaurant all tour! Our faces lit up like new years eve.
EATING FM – “TICO’s in Lincoln”
YESSSSS! FINALLY SOME MEXICAN FOOD!
Sat down and looked at the menu… great selection with shrimp tacos, enchiladas… not as simple and direct as King Taco but it will DO.

Ummm. Not trying to over react but this should have been the first warning sign we should have walked out the restaurant, when the salsa and chips came out… the salsa was that non-refridgerated-ortega-in-bottle stuff that you can find in the chip aisle of any supermarket… we’re believers tho and we live on faith, so we decided to stay and pray the taco plates weren’t reflective of the salsa.

I ordered the Shrimp Taco Plate, and i’m not sure if you should blame the restaurant, or blame the man that would order shrimp taco’s at an unknown spot in Lincoln Nebraska.. but lets give it a go.

Why is my tortilla soggy?
HOLD UP HOLD UP HOLD UP. I ordered a SHRIMP TACO… a standard shrimp taco usually has 5 jumbo shrimp in a corn tortilla with pico de gallo n maybe some cabbage n special sauce. This taco was a mushy torilla with oil all over it filled with spoon fulls of tiny shrimps that were the size of diced tomatos found in pico de gallo… like those dried shrimp you can find in bags or them mini shrimp they put in ceviche. Then to make matters worse, a huge glob of sour cream and shredded govt cheese on top.

Look at this small diced tomato next to a shrimp in the taco…
We’re not going to judge all of Lincoln Nebraska’s Mexican food by our meal here cuz it ain’t good to judge everyone by 1 persons wrong doing. We’re not here to shine bad light on places for no reason, just reporting like we see it off of comparisons to other places we’ve eaten at around the world.. and i have to report that Tico’s shrimp tacos and salsa get the lowest Eating FM rating known to Eating FM…

We got to the performance venue and a surprise guest showed up backstage..

Who could this mystery guest be?
LUCKILY the Sold Out Party Rock Tour show at the Bourbon Theater and the awesome crowd wasn’t like the food we just ate. SHOW WAS ROCKIN. Thanks for the love Lincoln Nebraska.

PARTY ROCK TOUR: VANCITY

Off to Vancouver Canada for our next stop. Been hearing the border patrol is extra strict in Canada and they’ve been turning alot of people away.. they wont let you in if you have a DUI or any type of felonies i believe and in a tour bus like ours we were sure to be pulled over and searched. When we got to the border we were told to pull over and head into the office for minor questioning. Luckily we didn’t seem too suspect so after a few minutes and passport checks we made it into Canada.. INTERNATIONAL SECRET AGENT STYLE.
FAR EAST MOVEMENT FANS are the illest.
Lily from Vancouver prepped before coming to Canada by sending us a box of goodies only found out there, and before the show she found us and dropped off another box of amazing Canadian treats.. n every package had a maple leaf on it.

Ketchup chips? at first they catch u off guard.. but after the 5th chip they become addicting
Em from portland dropped us off an amazing tray of homemade cookies…

EATING FM – “FATBURGER VANCOUVER”
After a hard nights work we were starving in the morning and we wanted something that reminded us of home. Right next to our hotel was a FAT BURGER!!!! for you OG FM Blog Readers, you might remember the battle that we had between FATBURGER Vs. IN-N-OUT, who was the winner?
Proh decided no to eat Fatburger with us, maybe cuz of pride, so we decided to rub it in his FACE…

BEST BURGER… they said it, not us.. lol
Rather than review Fatburger with the usual finger rating, we decided for this Eating FM to see if the Fatburger in Canada tastes the same as the Fatburger in Cali… so far the restaurant smells the same and all the ingredients look the same…

Now for the taste test… got a regular Fatburger with lettuce, relish, onions, mayo, mustard, and added an egg and some fatburger season salt for added flavor.

VAN CITY passed the test wit flying colors… looks like every fatburger no matter the city gets 3 FINGERS UP from half of FM lol.
FM ADVENTURE: FM INVADES CMJ
(Includes 3 Eating FM Food Reviews inside)
We just got back from a crazy week in New York City for CMJ. During CMJ (College Music Journal) Week, fresh artists and bands from all over the world come to rock at different showcases around the city to show whats up-and-coming in music. Right when we landed we could feel the music energy from all the peeps in town for CMJ, it definitely wasn’t the everyday NYC. Started the week performing at our own showcase, explored NYC for a few days, ate the best pizza on earth, made sure to try any food ny is known for, and ended the week with 2 party rockin shows at Tenjune and SL Simyone Lounge in the Meat Packing District… our most action packed New York trip yet…
CMJ DAY 1 – FM Showcase
Landed at JFK in the early afternoon off a redeye flight and hit up a taxi to our hotel outside of the city. We procrastinate since we’re ‘rappers’ so we couldn’t find a cool hotel available with such short notice. Ended up finding a spot online the day before in Long Island City right under the Queensbridge which ended up being pretty cool.

Hotel equipped with wine dispensers… romantic.

DJ Virman is admiring the romantic view from his penthouse suite.
-Eating FM “Best Pizza in NY” (Food Review)
New York Pizza is all we ever hear about from the west coast, and if you ask almost any New Yorker where the best pizza is 9 out of 10 people will say Lombardi’s. We didn’t waste any time and made it the first place we eat at on our trip. Pizza in LA is just pizza so it was hard for me to understand what the big deal was about a pizza parlor, since on the west coast a lot of times the restaurants that just serve pizza are empty. Some people told us this place is great cuz of the toppings, or others say its cuz of the baked crispy crust and sauce, but everyone says we gotta try it.

Historical. Lombardi’s is recognized as the first Pizzeria in the United States.
When we rolled it the place was packed and we had to give our names cuz the wait was 45min.. for pizza? wow. Can’t believe how excited we are to eat pizza, our stomachs were growling since it was our first meal of the day and the anticipation is making it hurt.

I CAME 2 PARTY.

Linked up with our homie Grey (interviewed Game and 50cent) who knew just what to order.
We ordered 2 large Pizzas which equals 16 slices for 6 of us.. that’s 2 1/2 slices per person.. math seems about right. Toppings were italian sausage, mushrooms, cheese, meatballs, red onion, sauce. DELICIOUS.

If we didn’t have a show in a few hours we’d order another pizza. It was daym good.

What WE Thought:
Restaurant: Lombardi’s Pizzeria
Location: New York City
Price Range: Average old school pizza price.. around $20 per pizza
We recommend: Italian Sausage, Mushroom and Meatball
Service: Good Service, but the wait to get in and the wait to bake the pizza killed us haha.
Rating: – ***3.0 Fingers – We agree with NY. its the best Pizza we’ve ever had.

STUFFED and almost showtime.
Our first show of this trip was for a CMJ Showcase set up by Moodswing360 at a spot called FAT BABY. Its a small spot in Manhattan where i hear people come thru to after party and leave not being able to remember anything due to a crazy night. Opening up the night for us was Roxy Cottontail, Mann, Cisco Adler’s new artist named Chris Young, our homies from LBC called the Cold Flamez who got a hit called “Miss Me Kiss Me”, and Tabi Bonney who’s featured on MTV and MTV2.

EATING FM – “EATING PORTLAND”

Our very first time to Portland, visiting for Portland Fashion week to perform at a few after parties.. and ready to discover all the greatness in the city in less than 24 hours… DJ Eman from Power 106 and Big Boy’s Neighborhood was in town too and told us that Portland is known for great food, so we made it our mission to try all the things this city is known for. EATING PORTLAND.
These days you never know what you can bring on the airplane with you, but portland wants to make sure you know… i mean we all know not to bring grenades, 9mm pistols and machetes on our carry ons…

BUT A SANTA CLAUSE SNOW GLOBE? what has this world come to????

Santa aint visiting the airport this year.
Got picked up in a pimped out suv, rollin with dj virman in the back seat and 15,000 watts 5 inches from our face…

“Real Men of Geniuuuus….Mr. Overly Loud Car Stereo Guy”
Was told that food in trucks or trailers is real popular in Portland, and not like taco trucks, but all kinds of food in trucks.. from italian to japanese to seafood to sandwiches, you can drive down streets and just see rows and rows of trailers that serve food..

We couldn’t pass up trying food from a trailer so we pulled over and hit up a truck that specialized in seafood. The menu had shrimp cocktail, salmon burgers and fish tacos.. sounds like the biz to me.

Northwest knows how to do it, this fish taco beats out rubios all day and gets the top rating of 3 FINGERS UP.
Heard of a legend about this mythical Nike Store located somewhere in Oregon that was made for only the employees of Nike to shop at and everything in there is 50% off? Not sure if its true or not but we’re on the hunt… We had to drive thru forests and sideroads into the deep deep boonies of Oregon looking for anything that looked like a nike ’swoosh’

Does such a place of greatness even exist?
EATING FM: RABBIT EATS RATTLESNAKE?
I dropped a quick tweet about this the other day and the responses I got inspired a full out post…

New Reeboks from our homie Blaze in NYC w/ New Orisue Tee and jeans from Fall 2009 Line.
I had heard about a spot in downtown Los Angeles a few blocks from my crib, that served different types of hot dogs you couldn’t get anywhere else. It’s called “Wurstkuche”

They’ve got a lot of crazy combos: mango/jalapeno, apricot/ginger, chicken apple and spices…

OK.. bratworst, italian and all the classics sound good but after scrolling down the menu it gets a bit like “WTF?” This menu is kinda crazy… Buffalo-beef and pork sausage, Duck-Bacon, Alligator-pork?

but the one that got me was the RATTLESNAKE X RABBIT… how ironic is that.. don’t rattlesnakes eat rabbits? like on those national geographic shows where the rattlesnake swallows a rabbit whole? and now the rattlesnake and rabbit are ground together and eaten as one? WOW i have to try this…

FM ADVENTURE: CHICAGO BEARZ
(Includes EATING FM – “FLATTOPPED”)
BON V, a fresh lounge/club in Chicago, brought us out for a performance and we lovin chi-town for so many reasons.

DJ Virman is dressed to party. “Don’t Be Tardy for the Pardy”
The FM Party-mobile has arrived.

Must not eat 2 days before visiting Chicago.. so that you have enough room to eat as much food as possible when you are there. The CHI is proud of their food. Our bro DJ Flipside from Chicago radio station B96 and DJ for the group the Jump Smokers (got that hit “Now You See Me” with Pitbull), hit us up to grab a bite before the show. He took us to one of the most interesting restaurants i’ve ever been to called FLATTOP.. and it happed to be right across the street from the studio where they shoot the world famous Oprah Winfrey Show..

EATING FM – “FLATTOPPPED”
Why is this Flattop restaurant so interesting? i don’t even know how to explain. Its like a play on mongolian bbq where you build your own dish with raw veggies and stuff, then you give the cook your dish of raw stuff to cook it for you and you get back a shrunken dish of your creation… but its not really mongolian bbq, its like a new Chicago mashup lol. Lemme try and brake this down..
